A note from the editor
Hi, I’m Sarah.
Sarah Scarano

For fifteen years I sold and designed. Outdoor kitchens on show floors, historic houses for travelers, closings for buyers. I was very good at it. It was never the whole of me.

The part I loved was the sketch on the back of the brochure: the thing that did not exist yet. Three years ago I started building it myself, in AI, automation and code. The last nine months happened in the open: 65 repositories, 2,120 commits, 20 products in production. That is not a hobby. That is what I am.

Today I run Modern Mustard Seed, an AI product studio, and Cross + Covenant, a brand with its own software. Sales taught me what people will pay for. Building is what I do with that.

Why a seat on your team, with two companies already

Both are bootstrapped and both run on agents, so they need less of me every month. What they need now is runway and reach. A fractional seat gives me both, and gives you someone who has already made every zero-to-one mistake on her own dime.

Feature

A voice agent is only interesting if it can act.

Anyone can make a phone bot that talks. I program agents that reach into the business and do the work while the caller is still on the line.

Builds the software demoA caller describes their business. The agent starts a build; the demo site is on its way before they hang up.

Field notes

Three fixes

Found by reading the numbers, not by waiting for a complaint.

11days

The build that could not fire.A voice tool stopped sending its payload on every call. The heartbeat said healthy. The cause was one enum inside an array schema that emptied the whole object. Found it, fixed it, wrote the rule so it cannot come back.

5.2percent

The bounce rate nobody could see.An email webhook was never registered, so delivery looked perfect. She built a reconciler that recovered the real number, then a brake that halts a day of outbound after two bounces in twenty-five sends.

22agents

One voice standard, everywhere.Callers were getting names spelled with letter sounds. She wrote the standard, built the installer, and applied it across the whole org in one command.

A green light is not proof. The logs are.

The maker side

Cross + Covenant

A faith apparel brand she designs and runs at crossandcovenant.co. The off-the-shelf storefront was not good enough, so she built the stack around it.

  • Headless storefrontA custom Next.js front on Vercel with Shopify checkout and Printify fulfilment behind it. Every pixel hers; the cart and the taxes theirs.
  • Daily devotionalA devotional every day and Bible reading plans, free, delivered to the site and the inbox by the same system that runs the store.
  • Prayer wallA public wall with a moderation workflow, so a request never sits unread.
  • Art pipelineImage generation, an alpha knockout cutter, a 4500 by 5400 print-file step. An idea becomes a live collection in a morning.
  • Higher and SentAn iOS formation app, local first. And scripture art you print, place in the world, and scan.

How She Thinks8
Risograph illustration of a sailboat on a foggy mountain lake at sunrise
Off the clock

Mornings in the lake. Sundays behind a camera.

She lives in Bigfork, Montana, on Flathead Lake. Most mornings start in the water with her husband and their two dogs, before the fog lifts off the bay. It is where the ideas arrive. On Sundays she is on the production team at Fresh Life Church, behind a camera and on the Resi stream: live, no second take. Good training for shipping.

Cold water first. Then the build.
