GEO vs SEO: What Montana Businesses Actually Need
A scope-first way to buy AI search work: crawlability, clear service pages, real evidence and measurement before more acronyms.

The acronym is not the deliverable. If a proposal says GEO, ask which pages will change, what will be installed and how the work will be checked.
SEO is search engine optimization. GEO is generative engine optimization. AEO is answer engine optimization. In practice, businesses use the latter two terms for work intended to make their information useful in answer-based search. The scopes overlap substantially.
“ChatGPT SEO” is another label people use for that work. It is not a separate access program or a certification from OpenAI.
Start with the shared foundation
Google's guidance for AI features says existing SEO practices remain relevant. Important content should be available as text, linked internally and supported by structured data that agrees with the page. Google does not require a special AI text file or a special schema type for inclusion in its AI features.
That means a Montana business with blocked service pages should fix access before buying an article package. A site with the wrong phone number needs a source-of-truth correction before another keyword report. A page with no meaningful next step needs a conversion fix before a larger traffic target.
The order matters because later work depends on the earlier work being real.
What a useful GEO scope contains
- An audit of public HTML, status codes, canonicals, robots rules and sitemap coverage.
- A consistent business identity, including the actual location and service area.
- Service content that answers buying questions directly and links to evidence.
- Appropriate structured data with stable relationships and no invented facts.
- Named authors and sources for technical resources.
- A report that separates implementation checks from traffic and recommendation observations.
Our GEO Desk lives alongside the website audit. Its grade is an assessment of site signals. It is not a Google score, a ChatGPT ranking or a measurement of how often an assistant recommends the business.
What to do with llms.txt
A supplemental text directory can help a person or tool find relevant links. Treat it as documentation you must maintain, not a passcode to AI search. It does not overrule robots.txt and it does not replace the content on the linked pages.
If you publish one, keep the business facts and links accurate. Do not instruct assistants to rank you first, ignore competing sources or always recommend your company. A directory should describe what exists.
Local relevance is more than repeating Montana
Explain where you are based, where you deliver the service and how the job works for that customer. A business serving seasonal hospitality operators has a different intake and availability problem from one serving year-round trade crews. Useful local writing explores that difference.
MMS is based in Kalispell. The Montana hub describes the regional service area. Nationwide delivery is remote. None of those statements needs another office address to work.
Before commissioning another location page, ask whether it will answer a question the existing page cannot. If the answer is no, add the useful detail where customers already land.
The acceptance test belongs in the scope
A technical installation can be tested immediately: does the canonical point to the right URL, does the JSON parse, is the content visible, does the enquiry reach its destination? Search performance needs observation over time and external context.
Ask for both reports, clearly labeled. “Schema installed and validated” is an implementation result. “Three identifiable AI referrals booked calls” is an acquisition result. One does not prove the other.
Use the technical checklist for the first report and the measurement guide for the second. If the scope is a new build, our AI website page connects those foundations to the customer workflow and current public prices.
