The Montana Business Owner's Guide to Getting Found by ChatGPT

A practical sequence for making a Montana business understandable in AI search, from the first page to the evidence behind the answer.

By · Published

An owner in Kalispell does not need a website that says “AI” twelve times. The owner needs a page that answers a real buying question and gives a search system enough evidence to identify the business correctly.

Start with the question a customer asks before they know your name. For a local service business, that is often a combination of a job, a place and a constraint: someone who repairs a metal roof near Bigfork, a lodge with the right accommodation, or a builder who can connect a website to a phone receptionist.

The job is to make the answer inspectable.

1. Establish the business before expanding the website

Write down the business name, actual location, public contact details, services and service boundaries. Compare those facts with the homepage, contact page, footer and any profiles you control. A service area is not another office. If you work in Whitefish from Kalispell, say that.

MMS follows that distinction: our studio is in Kalispell, and Northwest Montana is a service area. We also work with clients nationwide. Those facts belong in ordinary visible sentences, not only in structured data.

2. Give each important service a useful home

One page should explain one meaningful offer. Include what the customer receives, who it fits, what information you need, how the handoff works, and the next step. Include a price when you have a public price. Otherwise explain how the scope becomes a quote.

Do not make a new page just because another town exists. A useful local page explains a different customer situation, service boundary or delivery process. If changing the town name leaves the entire page intact, improve the underlying service page first.

For example, a seasonal accommodation business needs to explain how an enquiry becomes a confirmed reservation. The owner must distinguish general accommodation information from live availability. A website that leaves that distinction unclear creates work for both the guest and the operator.

3. Check access before polishing language

Fetch the public page without signing in. Inspect its title, canonical URL and visible text. Confirm it returns a successful status and is not marked noindex. Check that normal search crawlers can reach it through robots.txt and the hosting firewall.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as the relevant discovery crawler. GPTBot concerns model training and has an independent control. Allowing search access does not require opting in to training. OpenAI documents the distinction.

Use the technical checklist to turn this into a testable inspection instead of a vague “SEO done” checkbox.

4. Give the recommendation a reason

A list of services says what you sell. A build record explains what you can do. Publish the problem, what you built, a screenshot or working example when you have permission, and the actual result when you can substantiate it.

If you lack a measured result, describe the delivered functionality. “The enquiry is saved with the requested service and routed to the operator” is useful evidence. A made-up revenue lift is not. Our work collection is the place to inspect build scope separately from marketing language.

5. Record discovery and enquiries separately

Keep a small monthly log of the same questions across search systems. Record the date, exact prompt, whether search was used, cited pages and factual errors. Then compare identifiable AI referral visits with enquiries and bookings. A mention, a click and a customer are three different observations.

Use our measurement guide before claiming a visibility campaign produced revenue. A visitor can read an answer and never click, and a copied link can lose its source.

The first useful move

Pick the service page that matters most commercially. Make its business identity, scope, proof and next step clear. Test its accessibility and indexability. Only then decide which unanswered customer question deserves the next page.

The GEO Desk audit examines the current site. If the website itself needs rebuilding, our AI website approach explains how the page, phone and business workflow fit together.
