SEO vs GEO vs AEO: what a small business actually needs
For a small business they are one body of work, not three. SEO earns the ranked result on Google and Bing, AEO shapes the single answer a snippet or a voice assistant gives, and GEO decides whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview names you. Google itself says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond SEO best practices. So start where all three overlap: a site that can be crawled, listings that match everywhere, a page that answers each buyer question in its first sentence, and real reviews. Then measure each engine on its own, because the answers differ.

|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Earning a place in the ranked results on Google and Bing by being crawlable, relevant and trusted. | Making a business easy for a generative AI to find, verify and name in the answer it writes. | Shaping the single answer a search feature, a voice assistant or a featured snippet gives to a question. |
| Where the buyer sees it | A list of links, the map pack, and the ads around them. | A written answer from ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or a Google AI Overview that names one or a few businesses. | One answer: a snippet, a knowledge panel, or a spoken reply from Siri or Alexa. |
| What it reads | Your pages, the links to them, your Google Business Profile and your reviews. | Live web search through crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, listings such as Yelp and Bing Places, and your pages. | Structured data, short direct answers on the page, and the listings that sit behind voice assistants. |
| What wins it | For local results, Google says relevance, distance and popularity. | Facts that match across sources, pages that state the answer in the first sentence, and crawlers that are allowed in. | A page that states the answer plainly, marked up so a machine can lift it. |
| What to measure | Impressions, clicks and rankings in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. | Whether you are named, for which questions, in which engine, each month. | Whether the answer given is yours, and whether it is correct. |

One body of work, in this order
- 01
A site that can be crawled and read
Pages that index, a sitemap, fast on a phone, and robots.txt that lets in Googlebot, Bingbot and the AI search crawlers.
- 02
Listings that match everywhere
Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business and Yelp, with one name, address, phone and description on every one.
- 03
A page for each service and town
Each one answers a single buyer question in its first sentence, with schema that matches what the page says.
- 04
Real reviews, answered
A steady habit with a direct link, and every review replied to. Never bought, never gated.
- 05
Measure each engine separately
Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for rankings, and a monthly panel of buyer questions asked in each AI assistant, with the named-or-not count.
We do this work for businesses in every state, managed end to end: SEO and GEO, managed for you.
Which one fits you
Pick: Local SEO first
A one-town plumber, electrician or dentist
The map and the Google profile decide most calls. Then ask the AI assistants who they name for your town and trade.
Pick: Pages and listings
A contractor who serves six towns
A real page for each town and service, and one set of facts on every listing, so each engine can match you to each town.
Pick: AEO and listings
A business that takes calls from voice assistants and car dashboards
Siri, Alexa and Copilot read listings. Wrong hours or an old phone number is the failure to find first.
Pick: Pages and schema
An online-only business with no storefront
No map to win, so the pages that state who you are, what you do and for whom carry the weight, with schema that matches.
Still deciding? Let it take a call.
Drop your number, tell him your trade, and he answers the way your own receptionist would.

Common questions
Is GEO different from SEO?
+
In what you build, mostly not. Google states that the best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode and that there are no additional requirements to appear in them. GEO adds two things SEO did not need: letting the AI companies' search crawlers in, and measuring whether each assistant actually names you.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
+
No. AEO, answer engine optimization, is older and aims at the one answer a featured snippet, a knowledge panel or a voice assistant gives. GEO aims at the answer a generative AI writes. They share the same ground: clear pages, structured data and matching listings.
Which AI crawlers should a site allow?
+
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search and that sites opted out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. Anthropic says disabling Claude-SearchBot may reduce a site's visibility and accuracy in user search results. Perplexity says PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link sites in its results. A site that blocks them blocks itself.
Do I need an llms.txt file?
+
It costs little and states in one place who you are and which pages matter, and we publish one for every site we build. We do not claim any assistant requires it: the crawlers read your pages, so the pages are what carry the weight.
Can anyone guarantee a first-place ranking or an AI recommendation?
+
No. Google decides who ranks, and an AI assistant writes its answer again each time it is asked. What can be done is the work above, and a monthly measurement of what each engine says. We will tell you plainly when a rival is ahead for a reason we cannot change.
